First Album Review:
Jay Sean - My Own Way
"Ride It" 5/5 First song on the album, and puts it automatically at a great start. Love the song, and a great first single for Jay Sean as well as an amazing fresh start for the young newcomer and relatively unknown producer Alan Sampson. Just a perfect example of a good song you can vibe too.
"Maybe" 5/5 Yet another great production from Alan Sampson as well as a good second single and follow-up to the first song "Ride It". The lyrics are amazing and i love them because it's great to relate to them especially the "read your twice, thrice, four times a night it's true". Because i really did lol. But, besides that it's really a great song, don't really like how he replaced the word myspace with facebook, but i guess it's just a sign of how the internet world is changing lol
"I Won't Tell" 4/5 A third hit from Alan Sampson, man where did this guy come from? lol This song is great, missing a few elements production wise but i still find myself coming back to it, which is mostly due to Jay Sean's voice and his version of the bridge, which is just catchy in a way i can't describe.
"Stay" 5/5 I'm telling you, this Alan Sampson is going to start giving all the best producers out there are run for their money, just another amazing production and the last on the album from this new producer. Love the song, good strong lyrics, and Jay Sean's voice is flawless.
"Stuck in the Middle" 5/5 As mentioned, this is perhaps going to be the most popular song on the album, because of it's sheer image of American r&b music. The combination of Jay Sean's and Jared Cotter's voice just work out to create a masterpiece of a song that is sure to grab everyone by the ears and have them loving this before long, i'd love to see this as a third single, and perhaps an American single, as it would be a hit over here for sure.
"Good Enough" 4.5/5 Production on this is great, the beat is great and Jay Sean once again performs great, his voice a perfect addition to the production.
"Cry" 4/5 Just a good song. Production is great, Jay Sean's is great on it, not a perfect song, but close enough.
"All or Nothing" 4/5 My least favorite song as of now. Not because it's bad, it's just not all that great compared with the rest of the album. It is, however, a good song, that i can see myself just laying on my bed thinking about my life and listening to it, but i just can't really say that i'm going to have this in my mp3 player, but never-the-less to each his own and i'm sure there are those out there that will love it, i'm not amazed by it, but will not deny that it is a good song.
"Runaway" 4/5 Finally a true artist gets production from a well-known sought-after producer. Not really your typical Timbaland beat, but you can still hear his trademark in it. Jay Sean's voice is great, and it is reminiscent of a song i've heard before i just can't put my finger on the song, but i expected better from a track carrying the Timbaland name, but this just didn't deliver in a BIG way, but it is still a good song.
"Waiting" 4.5/5 this song is more or less a song that has great production with a sound i've come to really love, which is a sort of reversed flute sound, and has a different style to the whole album, the beat plays, but with the exception of the chorus, you are really focused totally on Jay Sean's voice, and when the chorus hits, you get a great feeling that courses through you and makes this song a good experience, not perfect, but just nearly there.
"Used to Love Her" 5/5 Love this song! amazing production. Great song for all those reminiscing moments. The beat and the lyrics are just perfect as is Jay Sean's interpretation of both, just love it. Even has some of those new age sounds we've been hearing in new r&b songs from usher and nkotb. Just a good song.
"Just a Friend" 4/5 smooth song for those just sitting around thinkin about that special someone who's "just a friend". lyrics are great for the situation it describes, great smooth production, Jay Sean's voice is on target, just a great song.
"Murder" 5/5 we've all been hearin this one for awhile, but this version is a bit tuned up and sounds even better. Jay Sean and Thara's voices compliment each other perfectly, harmonies are great, lyrics are perfect for every guy and gurl caught in that situation of bad gurl's/guy's that feel sooo right.
"Easy As 1,2,3" 4/5 nice smooth ending to a fantastic album, could be better, the chorus lacks a certain pizazz that the other songs grasp, but it's still not bad, good lyrics.
Overall = 4.8/5 "My Own Way" is pretty much the best album i've heard in awhile...It is a must have for r&b lovers as well as everyone else who enjoys good music and when an artist is at their pinnacle shape, as Jay Sean is. I just love this album, great overall production, especially from the young newcomer Alan Sampson, and amazing vocals by Jay Sean, this just makes me proud to be brown lol. But, seriously, go out and get this album, in my honest opinion, this may very well be the album of the year right here, a perfect album for 2008 and the perfect album in general, just a overall perfect mixture of r&b music. Simply amazing. Tops the first album by far, and i love the first album so that's really saying something. Although i have to say that i am a little sad that no indian style songs made it onto this album, because i really liked Jay Sean's old style that he had on the first album, but i guess that was just a marketing gimmick, as the album was geared to a more "brown audience" lol i am also a little sad Jay Sean didn't rap on this album either, or beatboxed for that matter, as i'm sure we all heard his on stage rendition of Usher's "Yeah" beat and also of his own song "Stolen" beat and vocals at the same time, and i've heard countless compliments and raves of his rapping on his debut album, the song "Me Against Myself" remains to be one of my all time favorite songs to this very day. But i am not disappointed in how this one turned out. Artists grow and shed old traditions , maybe Jay will bring back the old style for his next one , but as for now, he has done no wrong with his sophomore album "My Own Way". Get it. Listen to it. Absorb it. Get lost in it. Love it. Because this album is one where you will listen from track one to track 14 and never get bored let alone skip any tracks, as all are easy to relate too and are just a perfect refreshing break from the current state of r&b.
